The Logic of Gear Protection
SHOCK LOADING, THERMAL RUNAWAY, AND HYPOID GEAR SURVIVAL
The Hypoid Challenge
In a standard differential, the ring and pinion operate in a "hypoid" gear set. This design creates a complex combination of rolling and sliding friction. As the gears mesh, they want to wipe the oil right off the metal surfaces. If the oil film fails, you get instant metal transfer—turning your precision-machined gears into a pitted, noisy, melted boat anchor.
Thermal Runaway: The Invisible Rebuild
When you're towing heavy or rock crawling, the friction between the gears generates heat. Conventional gear oils begin to thin out and oxidize, losing their load-carrying capacity. This creates more friction, which creates more heat—a process called Thermal Runaway. AMSOIL Severe Gear is engineered with high-film-strength synthetics that resist this cycle, keeping temperatures stable even when the pumpkin is under maximum load.
Shock Loading and Surface Fatigue
Imagine dropping the clutch or hitting a ledge off-road. That sudden impact is Shock Loading. It can momentarily squeeze the lubricant out from between the gear teeth, leading to surface fatigue and "spalling" (where chunks of metal flake off). AMSOIL gear lubricants are fortified with extreme-pressure (EP) additives that form a sacrificial chemical barrier to handle these hits without damaging the hard-face of the gear.
The K&M Performance Drivetrain Solution
At K&M Performance (Dealer #30543586), we understand that Maximum Uptime is won in the axles. Whether you need a 75W-90 for your daily driver or a 250-weight for a dedicated crawler, the chemistry matters more than the brand name on the bottle.
- Superior Film Strength: Prevents metal-on-metal contact during high-torque sliding loads.
- Limited-Slip Performance: Optimized friction modifiers to prevent clutch chatter without sacrificing lock-up.
- Oxidation Resistance: Prevents the formation of sludge and varnish that clogs internal passages and seals.
