In a boat's lower unit, the only thing between you and a stranded afternoon is a couple of rubber seals. If those seals fail, water enters the gear case. Standard gear lubes "emulsify"—they turn into a milky foam that loses all load-carrying capacity, leading to gear pitting and bearing seizure.
